Stefan Michaelis started working with hot glass in 1985. That year he began his 3 year training as a scientific glassblower at the Staatliche Glasfachschule Hadamar in Germany, a school for 6 different crafts all working with glass. After he finished his specialist training he started working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Bio-chemistry and Isotope Research at the University of Stuttgart as a scientific glassblower. In 1999 he changed to the Schott Glaswerke in Mainz where he produced glass equipment for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. After that he decided to concentrate on arts and crafts and went to Farnham, England, to study three dimensional design in glass. He graduated after three years with an BA (HONS). He ran his own studio in London until 1996 and from 1996 until 2002 in Edinburgh. This came to an end when he decided to take up the challenge of running the studio in the old glass factory in the historic village of Schmidsfelden, where he started in 2003.
