Since 2003 Stefan Michaelis’s glass manufacture has been established in the historic glassmakers’ village of Schmidsfelden. The old craft of glassmaking has come to life again in a place that was build purely for the purpose of glassmaking. Everything fits together, the village, the old store, the museum and active glassmaking. The almost forgotten story of the Allgäu glassmakers comes to life again.
Stefan Michaelis combines the techniques of scientific glassblowing with traditional glass-making at the furnace. Both come together, his training and work experience as a scientific glassblower and his experience gathered in London glass studios. His focus lies on freely formed vessels for everyday use such as drinking vessels. But also garden decorations form a large part of his repertoire. His studio consists of a 60 kg furnace, annealing kiln and a high speed oxygen glory hole. The melting kiln is electric and since 2014 it has been running to 25% on solar power.
